In 18th century Europe, when precious woods became a symbol of material success, it became highly fashionable to use wood graining to imitate precious woods if you couldn’t afford the real thing. But wood graining also developed into a popular form of decoration in its own right. In England’s great manors and country houses you see wood graining painted naturalistically to fool the eye or rendered in a fantastical or naïve style to add whimsy and charm.

Using paint and traditional techniques we can create the look of mahogany, oak, walnut, antique pine, satinwood, maple, ebony and other fine wood species. We can also simulate the most precious and sought-after timber cuts such as burrs, flames, and feathers. Even the look of fine inlay and marquetry can be created in paint.
